Main Street: Greeneville to Apply for a Downtown Improvement Grant

Main Street: Greeneville is applying for a Downtown Improvement Grant.  The Main Street: Greeneville 18 block District will serve as the project area and funding may be used for approved activities to facades of commercial buildings within the project area. A portion of the funding may also be used for general downtown improvements to Eagle’s Rest Pedestrian Pathway & Courtyard on South Main Street, connecting The Crow Foot Alley parking area to Main Street.

This highly competitive grant is available to Tennessee Main Street and Tennessee Downtowns communities with maximum funding of $300,000 per community.

Main Street Greeneville’s application will be submitted in August and evaluated based on project need, impact, plan, and feasibility along with community support. The grant funding is provided through the State of Tennessee’s Department of Economic and Community Development.

Greeneville has received reimbursable grants in the past and this funding helped to rehab multiple downtown commercial properties such as Brolin and Bailey, The Capitol Theatre, The Theatre Depot, The Gentry and Tipton’s’ Café to name a few.  If awarded this funding will continue to assist property owners in their desire to reinvest in the community while preserving the historic structures and providing job creation in a retail and commercial environment.

Downtown Main Street District property owners and others interested to learn more about this grant including letters of intent for their projects, timeline, match, etc. are encouraged to contact Jann Mirkov, Main Street’s Executive Director at the Main Street office 423-639-7102 by August 7th.  For an overview of DIG visit the State of Tennessee link: Downtown Improvement Grant Program (tn.gov) (Please note the 2024 application webinar information should be updated within a few days.)

The eighteen-block district includes both commercial and residential properties.  The mission is to establish partnerships between public and private sectors dedicated to the revitalization of the Main Street District, the preservation of historic structures and promotion of heritage tourism. www.mainstreetgreeneville.org

Photos show the transformation of the Theatre Depot building at the corner of West Depot and Cutler Streets. The reinvestment happened over several phases and was funded in part by grants provided through TNECD and Main Street: Greeneville. The building is the future home of the Greeneville Theatre Guild.
